The vice postulator of the cause, Ricardo Rojas Valdés, explained that beginning this process implies recognizing that a son of the Church has heroically lived the Christian virtues: "Especially that of love of God and love of neighbor. The Church recognizes that there are Christians, in this case Father Cappel, who fulfills them admirably (…) In my opinion, and that of all those who knew him, Father Cappel is a saint in the sense that he has fulfilled and fulfilled in his life exemplary the virtues that the Church asks to go up to the altars," he noted.
Since the signing of the first decree of this long process, Father José Cappel has received the title of Servant of God, following later, if God so wills, the steps of venerable, blessed and saint.
As a diocesan Church and in communion with the Maryknoll family, we rejoice deeply on this day when we officially begin this journey. What are we seeking? The entire Church wants to look at, consider and ponder the life of Father José Cappel, guided by the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, in the sure light of the beatitudes and the virtues of faith, hope and love, we want to appreciate the life of Father José.
What we are experiencing has been brought about by the passing of a person, a man, a Christian, a son of the Church who left behind him an indelible mark. Here on the roads of Curepto, in the city and the surrounding countryside, the mark of Father José is synonymous with blessing, the presence of God, goodness, trustworthiness and joy. The greatness of Father José cannot be measured by the measures with which we always measure people; nor are we here to mention the positions he held or the great works he inspired or inaugurated. We are here to seek the image of Jesus Christ in a simple person, in a life without cameras or spectacle.
Then all the members of the tribunal accepted the positions to which they were appointed by signing the respective documents: Father Carlos Letelier, episcopal delegate; Father Alejandro Longueira sj, promoter of justice; Priscila Rosas, notary clerk; César Rodríguez, assistant notary; Ricardo Rojas, vice-postulator. This moment ended with the solemn signing of the document by Monsignor Horacio Valenzuela.
Then, Father Jaime Correa sj, ecclesiastical notary, announced that there are now 20 servants of God who are in the process of canonization in Chile: “I congratulate you for the appreciation you have for Father Cappel; I have the experience of having participated in the cause of San Alberto Hurtado, in that of Monsignor Francisco Valdés, who is already venerable, in that of Father Esteban Gumucio, in that of Monsignor Enrique Alvear, among others. I think that this Father Cappel thing could move forward quite quickly and we are already entrusting ourselves to him.”
The activity was presided over by Monsignor Galo Fernández Villaseca, Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Talca, and began with the celebration of the Eucharist in the parish seat of Curepto.
After the Mass, the Delegate Tribunal of the Diocesan Investigation of the Cause of Beatification and Canonization of the Servant of God, Fr. José Enrique Cappel Farfsing, a professed priest of the Missionary Congregation of the Maryknoll Fathers, was convened. The Vice-Postulator of the Cause, Ricardo Rojas Valdés, was also convened.
In this Complementary Session, Monsignor Fernández presented the decree Nihil Obstat, which indicates that there is no impediment to continuing with this process.
“A formal act was carried out in the process by which it was declared that there is no obstacle in his thought or his doctrine. Father José does not have many writings. In this process it is checked that there is nothing contrary to the faith. In all the testimonies it is seen that he is a man of God, a servant,” said the Apostolic Administrator.
Meanwhile, Ricardo Rojas, vice-postulator of the canonization cause, explained after the Mass that the document arrived from Rome indicating that there are no obstacles to continue with the cause of Father José.
With this, the first step, which is the opening of the cause, is “well” concluded. In other words, what was sealed is that this opening is well done and from now on Father José Cappel can be called “Servant of God.”
The second step is called “Venerable”, for which Rojas and his team are working on what is called the Diocesan Investigation on the Life, Work, Virtues and Reputation of Sainthood of Father José Cappel.
“For this we are doing at least 70 interrogations. Afterwards we will make a report with all the interrogations and send it to Rome,” said the vice-postulator. The third step is Beatification and for that a miracle is needed. For the last step to be a Saint, another miracle is required.
